Scarborough & the coast · YO11–YO22
Salt air, wind-driven rain and steep streets make the Yorkshire coast hard on a driveway. We build for Scarborough’s conditions, from the South Cliff to Scalby, Filey and Whitby.
Overview
Scarborough’s weather comes straight off the North Sea. Easterly winds drive rain sideways, sea frets roll in and salt settles on everything near the front. Add steep streets running down to both bays, Victorian terraces and guest houses on the cliffs, and estates of semis and bungalows in Newby, Scalby and Eastfield, and you get a very particular set of driveway problems.
Wind is the first thing to plan for. On exposed sites, kiln-dried sand can be blown or washed out of block paving joints, which lets the blocks shift and weeds take hold. On frontages facing the sea we use a stabilised jointing material and suggest checking the joints after the first winter. Drainage gratings and fixings near the front should be galvanised or stainless steel, or they’ll rust within a few seasons. Frost is usually gentler right on the coast than inland, but wind-driven rain gets into everything, so falls and drainage matter here as much as anywhere.
Steep plots need care too, especially near the cliffs. On clifftop and hillside properties we never put a soakaway where water could weaken a slope, and we design falls so run-off goes somewhere safe. For many coastal homes, block paving in Scarborough gives the right mix of grip and repairability, while a tarmac driveway suits longer drives and guest house forecourts that see a lot of comings and goings.
Since Scarborough Borough Council was replaced in 2023, North Yorkshire Council has dealt with dropped kerbs and planning in Scarborough, Filey and Whitby. Villages such as Robin Hood’s Bay sit inside the North York Moors National Park, where the park authority deals with planning, though dropped kerbs still go to North Yorkshire Council. If you’re still choosing a surface, see block paving, resin and tarmac compared for how each copes with weather and wear. We cover the coast from Filey to Whitby and inland to Pickering as part of our North Yorkshire area.
Local knowledge
Near the seafront, salt and wind wear out cheap fittings and strip sand from joints. We use stabilised jointing on exposed block paving, galvanised or stainless drainage gratings, and patio materials such as porcelain that shrug off salt and algae.
Scarborough and Whitby have some very steep streets and clifftop plots. We keep water away from slopes, never put a soakaway close to a cliff or bank, and haunch the edging in concrete, which stops the surface slowly sliding down the hill.
Many coastal properties need parking for guests as well as the household. We design forecourts for several cars to turn and park, mark out bays in contrasting blocks where needed, and build a deeper sub-base where traffic will be heavier than on a family drive.
Services
On the coast, block paving and tarmac with rust-proof fittings handle the conditions well, and porcelain or sandstone patios suit sheltered gardens.
Questions
Yes. We cover the coast from Filey and Hunmanby up to Whitby and Robin Hood’s Bay, and inland to Pickering and the villages around Seamer. Some properties have tight access down narrow lanes or steep streets, so we work out at the survey where deliveries can be dropped and how materials will reach your door before we book the job.
The surface itself copes well if it’s built properly. Concrete blocks, tarmac and good porcelain all handle salt air. The weak points are metal fittings, which can rust, and sand joints, which wind and rain can strip out. We use rust-resistant gratings and stabilised jointing near the sea, and we’ll tell you what simple upkeep helps.
Robin Hood’s Bay is inside the North York Moors National Park, so planning applications go to the North York Moors National Park Authority rather than North Yorkshire Council. Much of the village is also a conservation area. Dropped kerbs and highway matters still go to North Yorkshire Council. We’ll check what your property needs before we design anything.
