Rotherham · S60–S66, S25 & S26
Plenty of Rotherham homes still have the concrete drive they were built with, now cracked and sunken. We’ll tell you honestly whether it can be overlaid or needs replacing, then do the job properly.
Overview
Rotherham is a borough of contrasts. The town centre sits low where the Don and the Rother meet, while the suburbs climb the hills around it. Moorgate, Broom and Whiston have large older houses on hilly, tree-lined roads; Wickersley, Bramley and Sunnyside are full of 1960s and 1970s semis and bungalows; and newer estates such as Waverley have grown on former industrial land. Villages such as Wentworth have stone cottages and conservation areas of their own.
Many drives here are still the original concrete, now cracked, sunk at the edges or patched over the years. The question is always whether the slab underneath is sound. If it is, a resin bound overlay in Rotherham can go straight on top, which saves digging out and disposing of the old concrete. If it’s cracked through, moving or sinking, we dig it out and start again, because any crack in the base will sooner or later show through the new resin. Tarmac drives from the same era can be overlaid in the same way, as long as they’re stable and not breaking up.
For a full rebuild, block paving suits Rotherham’s estates well because it’s strong, easy to repair and comes in colours that work with both brick and stone. Tarmac suits longer drives. Shared drives between semis are common on the older estates, so we agree the boundary and the levels with both households before we start. If you’re planning ahead, we can build in level, step-free paths, wider gateways and non-slip surfaces from the start, which is far easier than adding them later.
Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council approves dropped kerbs across the borough, including Wath, Rawmarsh, Maltby, Dinnington and Aston. Ground conditions vary from heavy clay to the limestone around Maltby, so we check drainage before we design anything. Our resin driveway cost guide explains when an overlay makes sense, and you can see our other South Yorkshire towns.
Local knowledge
Resin can go over sound concrete or tarmac, but only if the base is stable, free of cracks and sheds water properly. We test the slab at the survey. If it fails, we’ll say so, because an overlay on a bad base cracks and lifts, and that’s money wasted.
Moorgate, Kimberworth and parts of Broom are steep, and many drives drop towards the road or the front door. We put a channel drain where the slope bottoms out, haunch the edging in concrete and choose surfaces that give tyres grip in winter.
Step-free access is easier to build in than to add later. We can lay gentle ramps instead of steps, level thresholds with a drainage channel at the door, wider paths for a wheelchair or walker and non-slip finishes, all as part of a new drive.
Services
Many Rotherham drives start as tired concrete; we’ll advise whether resin over the top, new block paving or tarmac is the right fix.
Questions
Sometimes. The concrete needs to be sound: no cracks running through it, no rocking sections, no sinking edges and a fall that sheds water. We check it at the survey by eye, by sounding it with a hammer and by looking at the edges. If it passes, an overlay is quicker and costs less than digging out. If it doesn’t, we’ll recommend a full rebuild and explain why.
Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council looks after highways across the borough, from Rawmarsh and Wath to Maltby, Dinnington and Aston. A new or wider crossing needs the council’s go-ahead before you use the drive, and you apply for it separately. We don’t build dropped kerbs ourselves, but we’ll explain what’s involved and set the drive out so the two line up.
In most cases, yes. We can replace steps with a gentle slope, widen the path and use a non-slip finish. If the door threshold is close to ground level, we fit a drainage channel in front of it so rain can’t run inside, and we keep the paving below the damp-proof course everywhere else.
