Sheffield is built on hills, and plenty of its drives drop steeply towards the house. We design the levels and drainage first, then build a surface that’s safe in winter and keeps water out of the garage.
Overview
Sheffield is known as the city of seven hills, and you feel every one of them when you’re carrying paving slabs. Victorian terraces step up the slopes in Walkley and Crookes, large stone villas line the roads of Nether Edge, Ranmoor and Fulwood, and suburbs like Dore, Totley and Woodseats mix interwar semis with newer homes. To the west, the city runs straight into the Peak District.
A common Sheffield problem is a drive that slopes down towards the house, or to a garage below road level. Every drop of rain on the drive, and often some from the road, runs straight to the lowest point. We put a properly sized channel drain across the bottom, connected to a soakaway or a suitable drain, and shape the surface so the water reaches it. Where the dropped kerb allows, we also form a slight rise at the entrance, which stops road water pouring in.
On slopes like these, block paving in Sheffield gives good grip, follows changes in level well and is easy to repair a few blocks at a time. A tarmac driveway is a strong choice for longer, steep drives, while resin works on gentler gradients. Edging set in concrete is essential on any slope, otherwise the surface slowly creeps downhill. In terraced back gardens, a patio on two or three levels linked by steps is usually more useful than one big flat area.
Sheffield City Council approves dropped kerbs across the city, from Stocksbridge and Chapeltown to Mosborough. On the western edge, around Dore, Totley and Fulwood, some homes border or fall inside the Peak District National Park, and inside that boundary it’s the park authority, not the city council, that decides planning matters. We’ll check which rules apply when we visit. Our side-by-side guide to block paving, resin and tarmac is worth a look before the survey, and Sheffield is part of our South Yorkshire coverage.
Local knowledge
Where a drive slopes down to the house or a garage, water from the drive and sometimes the road heads straight for your door. A full-width channel drain, a soakaway sized for the area and a slight rise at the entrance keep it out.
Many Sheffield gardens are cut into the hillside and held up by old walls. We check them before digging, keep heavy loads back from any weak sections and build patios on several levels, linked by steps, rather than forcing one large flat area.
Homes on the western edge of the city get more rain, frost and snow than the centre. Textured finishes give tyres something to grip on icy mornings, and a well-compacted, free-draining sub-base stops frost lifting the surface from below.
Services
For Sheffield’s slopes we usually recommend block paving or tarmac with a channel drain at the low point, and patios on more than one level for hillside gardens.
Questions
We deal with it at three points. At the top, a slight rise at the entrance stops water from the road running in. Across the drive, the surface is shaped to carry water to the low point. At the bottom, a full-width channel drain takes it to a soakaway or suitable drain before it reaches the garage door.
Yes, around Sheffield’s western edge and the villages beyond it. Inside the National Park, the Peak District National Park Authority is the planning authority, and it pays close attention to materials and appearance. We’ll check whether your property is inside the boundary and suggest surfaces likely to be acceptable before any design is finalised.
Sheffield City Council deals with every address in the city, from Stocksbridge and Chapeltown in the north to Mosborough in the south-east. Get its approval before the new drive is used, because the crossing is a separate job from your drive. We leave the crossing to the council’s arrangements, but we’ll go through what it asks for and set the drive out to meet it.
